“Mediterraneo” Contemporary Ceramics Competition, Grottaglie, Italy

I am delighted to have a piece of work selected for the “Mediterraneo” Contemporary Ceramics Competition in Grottaglie, Italy.

The work that has been chose is Foraminifera IV, which developed out of a residency at Interface, Connemara in Ireland in June 2023 as part of The Ceramic House curatorial project EDGES. I investigated the geology and ecology of the coastline, bogs and mountains of Connemara collecting samples of moss, lichen, fossils and flora. I designed a series of forms which represent microscopic fossils, foraminifera, found in each grain of sand in the beaches of Dogs Bay in Connemara. I developed glazes that visually reference the surface textures of moss and lichen spreading across the surface of the ceramics. The work was exhibited initially at Wexford Arts Centre and subsequently the entire body of work at Watts Gallery in 2024.
