Dates: 21 August – 8 September 2027
Hornsgatan 50, 118 21 Stockholm, Sweden
I have been invited back to present a solo show at Kaolin in Stockholm. The last sell out exhibition, in 2022, was a huge success and the first ever presentation of my wood fired Shetland Flora created during Kohila wood firing symposium in Estonia.
This time I will be presenting Ceramic Wallpaper: Peonies. I made this work when I was guest artist at Guldagergaard Woodfiring Symposium in Denmark and was made for my Ceramic House curatorial project, Interbeing, a collaborative exploration in ceramics and sound by artists from China, Hong Kong and the UK. Ceramic Wallpaper: Peonies consists of two wall mounted installations. The larger of the two measures 3m x 1.8m, is made of unglazed porcelain fired in a wood kiln for 6 days; all the colours and textures resulted from the atmosphere in the kiln, flames and ash. The other piece measures 1.5 x 1.4m, also unglazed porcelain fired in a wood kiln with the introduction of soda, which produced a palette of hues in grey with a shiny finish. The larger piece was selected for the XVI International Biennial of Ceramic Art of Aveiro in Portugal. The soda wood fired piece was part of Emptiness is Form, an exhibition of Chinese ceramics at The Ceramic House, part of Interbeing. Ceramic Wallpaper: Peonies also features in our book Perfection of Understanding, published as a finale of Interbeing, in the form of a photo-essay whereby the peonies take a virtual tour of China, digitally transposed on to photographs of significant walls of China submitted by artists involved in Interbeing.
The exhibition at Kaolin will bring together the two installations in an exhibition for the first time and will be presented alongside individual wood fired peonies created especially for the show.
